Managing Eating Disorders

21 Apr 2020 | Eating Disorders

Worries about weight, body image and eating are normal, up to a point. However, an eating disorder may manifest if an individual develops an undesirable mentality towards his or her food, to the degree that it assumes control over their life detrimentally affecting their physical and mental health. Adolescents tend to be at higher risk but anyone can be affected.

Eating disorders can include eating excessively, inadequate eating or becoming fixated on body weight, appearance and shape. The two main types of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Individuals suffering from such disorders will require assessment by a specialist. Then according to the severity of the symptoms and any relevant physical health issues, a care plan will be developed.

Care plans often include talking therapies such as family therapy. In some cases, an individual may also require admission to hospital for stabilising their weight, along with medication as a part of some care plans.
