It is normal for people to feel fearful or worried from time to time. It becomes an issue when they worry all the time or worry much more than others in similar situations. This severe anxiety can cause distress and seriously affect everyday lives.
Help is required if the anxiety is having an impact on health, the individual's or other people’s safety or when it stops someone from enjoying and achieving in their everyday life.
The type of specialist support needed will depend on the cause of anxiety. Usually treatment will be in the form of a talking therapy, for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Occasionally medication may be required if the anxiety does not improve over time.
